Britain leads the world in digital TV

Britain has the highest penetration of digital television of any country in the world, Internet analysts Jupiter MMXI said on Tuesday.

HALF OF BRITISH HOMES will have digital TV by the end of 2002 compared with only a quarter across Europe as a whole, it said, basing its prediction on research including surveys and interviews with industry executives.

Technology is sweeping the Continent and people want access to it — fast. Nearly a quarter of households will have faster Internet access through a broadband connection in a year’s time, Jupiter said.

“The rate of growth isn’t uniform across Europe,” Jupiter analyst Mark Mulligan told Reuters.

He said in south European countries, such as Italy and Portugal, people were making a technological leapfrog and opting for broadband as their first ever Internet connection.

Mulligan said that despite the economic downturn consumers were still spending on the Internet and more people were doing their shopping online once their fears over security of web-based transactions were calmed.

With big record labels concentrating their attention — and portals such as digital music service “pressplay” — on the United States, there was great potential for companies in Europe, he said.

“This leaves a real window of opportunity for smaller independent music groups in Europe,” Mulligan said, adding that revenues were still comparatively small and the industry was still in a period of experimentation.
