Web Site Helps
7 Things That Every Web Developer Should Do
Some things about web development are common sense, but you know that even the most basic parts of a web site can be neglected. Every web site that we develop, small, medium, large or super-size goes is given the following treatment. Your developer should do the same or you should find someone that does.
- Customer Service. It is our goal that no client of ours is ever confused by the development process of their web site. Some people hand us an envelope filled with information and say, "Make me a web site". Others want to be more involved in the process. Whatever your comfort level is, we make sure you are completely comfortable throughout the entire process. If you have concerns about something, whether it's a design issue, cost or just the color of a word, let us know and we will be happy to discuss it with you. Good communication makes this a win-win situation for everyone.
- Clean code (file structure). This is an area that many people never see but it tells a great deal about the developer. If files are organized and clean, it not only makes initial development proceed more smoothly, but changes and upkeep go much better as well. We hand-code every page so that if someone else needs to edit it in the future, it is laid out in such a way that it is easy to make changes.
- Consistency. Every web site needs to maintain consistency throughout so the visitors to your site don't think they've accidently been directed to another site. Style sheets and include files allow changes to be made across many pages by making a small change in one location. If a person would rather have a different font for each heading or a different navigational button, a quick change in one file will make that change to every location throughout the site. This keeps development and maintenance costs down as well as improving functionality.
- Image optimization. Speed is what it's all about on the Internet. A visitor to your site wants to see those great images and graphics that you have, but they don't want to wait for them to load. Every image is optimized twice, to make sure that it looks how it is supposed to and that it loads as quickly as possible.
- Testing. Because your visitors maybe using a Mac or a PC, Internet Explorer or Netscape, version 4.5 or 6.0, testing makes sure that your site looks they way it is supposed to look to everyone. Extensive testing is critical to your site's success.
- META tags. META tags contain information about your site and help search engines know how to place you in their listings. Even without submitting your site to a search engine, good META tags will help you get better placement on all of the search engines. Developing a good list of keywords about your site is critical to the success of your META tags.
- General upkeep. Some developers will charge you for every little change that the user needs to implement. If you need something updated on your web site, we'll let you know upfront how much the costs will be. If it's small there not be any cost at all. Small things need to be changed; it shouldn't be a hassle for you.
